I have this way of going into other classrooms throughout my prep, delivering items my students need to be successful: drafts that I've bled ink all over, extra copies of short stories so students can make up work at home and copies of novels that students have asked me for. I bought a copy of As I Lay Dying for a student of mine this week. He wants to read it for an author study paper I am forcing my creative writing kids to write.
I walked into his math class, interrupting the flow of the lesson, especially when I entered and about three kids yelled, "Beam!" and one said, "Beam! How are you?" So much for just sneaking in to deliver gifts.
I handed over As I Lay Dying and slunk toward the door.
Another boy asked, "What book is that?" seeing my student's face light up.
As I was slinking out, I heard that boy ask, "As I Lay Dying? Isn't that a band name?"
